Open Source and NESSI at IST2006

The ObjectWeb Consortium, founding partner of the NESSI European Technology Platform on Software and Services, and COSS, the Finnish Centre for Open Source Software jointly organize a networking session during the upcoming IST event.

Event description and context

The IST 2006 edition of the most important European event in the field of Information Society Technologies will coincide with the launch of the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Development.

NESSI is a European technology platform aiming to provide a unified view for European research in services architectures and software infrastructures. It will define technologies, strategies and deployment policies fostering new, open, industrial solutions and societal applications that enhance the safety, security and well-being of citizens. As a founding partner, ObjectWeb contributes to the open source activities in NESSI through an endeavour called “ONESSI”.

Objectives of the session

How Europe can benefit from Open Source Software? How can Open Source be stimulated in Europe with FP7 and NESSI, the Networked European Software and Services Initiative?

The networking session will propose participants to tackle these issues in an interactive manner. It will address the role of open standards and their central position in the NESSI vision, as well as the ways to leverage ONESSI as a channel to promote open source implementations of the NESSI framework. Open source proponents, ICT providers and users will liaise and agree on concrete proposals for participation in the development of the NESSI framework.
